Love your Jeans and they’ll love you right back.

You’ve found the perfect pair, they hug your body in all the right places and give you the confidence to take on the world. Well done you! Finding the perfect pair of jeans is an achievement in itself but now’s the hard part – caring for your denim. As the title says you love your jeans and they’ll love you right back, in other words; look after them and they’ll be your constant wardrobe staple for years to come. Denim Dayze is here to help!

  1. You’ve heard it before, but I’m sorry folks I’m saying it again – Wash your denim as little as possible.  Every 5-10 wears is about right. Each time you wash causes dye to release and depending on how you wash could damage the strength of the fabric. Keep it to a minimum. I’m a huge fan of baby-wipes for spot cleaning, just be sure to opt for unscented brands as the chemicals can affect certain fabrics. Or try steaming you jeans between wears, not only will it remove any creases it will help eliminate odors and germs.
  2. Bare your legs – Wash your jeans inside-out. The inside of the jean is what becomes dirtiest (sweat, body oils, skin cells), washing them inside out guarantees the dirtiest part of the fabric gets the best clean. This also helps reduce colour fading. Be sure to un-cuff and remove everything from pockets before washing as this can trap the dirt.
  3. Keep it cool – Wash in cold water on a gentle cycle. Or better yet, hand wash in cold water. As mentioned earlier denim doesn’t require a lot of effort to clean so the gentler you are, the less impact it will have in terms of wear-and-tear. Hand washing can be as simple as soaking in cold water for an hour, no elbow grease necessary. Warm water causes the fabric to shrink and loose its strength – there goes your perfect fit! And of course if you’re doing a full load, be sure to wash with like minded colours in case of dye leakage.
  4. Save your soap for yourself! – Minimal detergent. In case I haven’t got it across yet, Denim doesn’t need much washing to become clean. Be light on with your detergent as the chemicals slowly break down the fabric over time, which will result in losing your love for what was your favourite pair. Avoid using anything too harsh, bleach is a big no-no.
  5. Don’t you dare touch that dryer – Air-dry. Remember we’re doing all that we can to avoid breaking down the strength of the fabric and sadly excessive heat will absolutely do this, so please ditch the dryer and go environmental. Air drying your jeans may take longer but it’ll be worth it in the long-run. Keep them inside out to avoid any sun damage.
  6. Voila! Your jeans are ready for strutting the streets once again.

I’d love to do a post in the future about ways to keep black jeans black, white jeans white, etc. I’d love to hear your old wives tales/suggestions on the matter so please comment away!
